A New York City native, currently residing in Brooklyn, New York, Eric Fleischman is a published author of the chess book, “The Richter-Veresov Attack: Qd3 Variation,” which was published by Mongoose Press in 2023. He received the United States Chess Federation (U.S.C.F.) National Chess Master title in 1987 and the title of U.S.C.F. Original Life Chess Master in 2018. Mr. Fleischman’s chess expertise includes being a chess instructor, chess tournament director, chess coach and trainer, chess writer, chess lecturer, and special chess events promoter. He has served as tournament director and organizer, given numerous simultaneous chess exhibitions in Brooklyn, and lectured on opening theory including The Richter-Veresov Attack (most recently at the Chess Forum in Manhattan in October 2024 and Sheepshead Bay Library in Brooklyn in October 2024). He is an effective chess teacher, coach and trainer for children and adults of all skill levels and ages. Mr. Fleischman has demonstrated a vast knowledge of opening, middlegame and endgame chess theory. Furthermore, he is creative and analytical with exceptional research, writing and public speaking skills.
Mr. Fleischman’s chess accomplishments include coordinating the Brooklyn Borough President’s borough- wide play-offs for the First and Second Annual All-Brooklyn Scholastic Chess Championship and recognition ceremonies for Brooklyn’s best chess players (2001 and 2002); Coordinated, planned and assisted with marketing and acted as Master of Ceremonies for the Metro-Tech Garden and Chess Festival, featuring the first-ever garden and chess festival in Brooklyn (2000). The event was televised live on New York 1 and Mr. Fleischman was interviewed on Channel 4. Mr. Fleischman wrote several publications and articles some of which include: “Why Play Chess,” Midwood Development Corporation newsletter Fall/Winter 2006, “Brooklyn: County of Kings and Home of Champions,” Chess Life magazine, October 2002; and “Problem Solving in Chess: The Development of a Prototypical Model to Account for Performance on Chess Problem Solving Tasks,” (Unpublished Master’s Thesis 1998, Long Island University, Brooklyn.
Mr. Fleischman’s chess tournament achievements include being the winner of more than ten individual and team chess tournaments, such as: first place Marshall Chess Club Game 50 Open Section April 12, 2025; first place Chess Chevra Worldwide Online Chess Tournament, Section A; second place (tied) Marshall Chess Club Senior Championship November 2024; first place (tied) in the New York Open Under-2200 section in 1994; and clear first place in the U.S. Amateur Team Championship East Under-2000 Section and the Under-1900 Section in 1984 and 1993, respectively.
Mr. Fleischman’s chess honors include receiving the Arthur Bisguier “Best Game” award in the Commercial Chess League of New York (CCLNY) 1994-1995. Mr. Fleischman has also been the President of the Brooklyn College Chess Club and Captain of the college chess team (1982) and Vice President of the St. Francis College Chess Club (1985).
Mr. Fleischman plays chess competitively and is an ongoing member of the U.S.C.F. and current member of the Marshall Chess Club in New York City (where he has lectured on “The Richter-Veresov Attack: Qd3 Variation).
